Meet The Driver – Part 1

During the season we will have interviews with all Division 1 drivers. We will ask them all sorts of things, from how they race to who their favourite real life drivers are to what they race on.

In episode 1 we will start off with one of the drivers who won the constructors title and team mate of the defending drivers champion Shaby2K. They will be teaming up once again with this season and they will do so driving for the Scuderia Ferrari. It’s Wesley_VR_99.

Welcome Wesley!

Let’s start with your name first, how did you get to this username?

For me the username has come along quite easily. My first name is Wesley, VR are the initials of my surname which is van Rens and I am born in 1999 which translates in the 99 at the end.

How did you get to your driver number?

My driver number is 99, as I was born in 1999. Because that number is not available in this game, I have gone with 46 which is added up by my birthdate 14+4+1+9+9+9.

A little more personal info about you, how old are you and where do you live?

At the moment I am 22 years old (23 soon) and I live in a small town called Horst in the south of the Netherlands.

What do you do in life? Work, study or something else

I work at an accountancy/advisory bureau as a beginning assistant account fulltime.

About the racing, what are your expectations for this season?

I hope to improve on last season where I had too many incidents in the first few races. As I already got a podium in the preseason race I am aiming for a top 5 finish in the drivers championship.

Who do you think are the biggest candidates for the title?

I think the two contenders from last season, Shaby and Chalkerz will also battle for the title for this season. I think an outsider could be Brent, as he has improved a lot last season and might be able to challenge Shaby and Chalkerz.

How do you prepare for a league race?

I mostly start with a couple of laps on TT to get familiar with the track. After that I practice qualifying and race stints in multiplayer or Grand Prix mode.

How did you get into sim racing? And for how long have you been sim racing?

I have got into sim racing when I first bought the F1 game and was looking for a more serious experience then open lobbies, I think I have now been simracing for 3.5 to 4 years.

As a Division 1 driver you are clearly among the faster guys in the league. What makes you so quick?

I think the main thing is to get a good setup that suits your own driving style. After that you need to turn a few assists off and get comfortable with the car. Then speed will come.

What other games do you like to play?

I really like Gran Turismo 7, ACC and Fifa as other games.

What was your first console?

Playstation 4.

What was your first F1 game?

F1 2017.

About real racing, what was the first F1 Grand Prix you watched?

A very long time ago, I think the first time I watched I was probably around 4-5 years old when, the exact Grand Prix I can’t remember.

Have you ever been to a Formula 1 Grand Prix? When and where if so and what is possibly the next one you will visit?

I have visited the German and Belgian Grand Prix in 2016. I hope to visit a european Grand Prix this year but nothing has been booked yet.

Who is or are your favourite drivers?

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez

Do you also follow other series?

I pretty much follow all motorsports that are there from Indycar to Porsche Supercup, and the WEC to Imsa for example.

And finally, back to you on the sim. How do you race? And can you share a picture of how your setup looks?

I race with a wheel and sit in a comfortable chair with a handmade whe stand

Anything you would like to add?

I have nothing more to add

In the picture you can see how Wesley’s sim racing rig looks. Thank you for your time, Wesley!
